Samaritans is looking for Galwegians to help people in distress.

The race is on to find the fastest team in the West of Ireland as Galway Samaritans launch their 40th Anniversary Cyclathon challenge.

It all goes back to the old adage, ‘A problem shared is a problem halved.’ To mark World Suicide Prevention Day which takes place today, Samaritans is encouraging anyone worried about a friend, colleague, or family member who may be struggling to cope to simply ask, ‘Are you OK?’

Almost half a million people called the Samaritans service in Ireland last year with the number of callers to the Galway phoneline reaching an all time high.

Samaritan volunteers will be in the city centre this weekend providing discreet face-to-face emotional support at Eyre Square to anyone attending the Galway Arts Festival. This outreach programme will be available from Friday evening through to early Sunday. Volunteers will provide emotional support to people in need and to raise awareness of suicide. Events such as this allow Samaritans to go direct to those in emotional need who would not ordinarily come directly to them.

In February 1992, Athlone Samaritans started their service to offer emotional support to anyone who was lonely, isolated, distressed, or despairing and to people who were having thoughts about ending their lives. In recognition of the work of Samaritans for the past 20 years, Athlone Town Council hosted a civic reception last week.

Athlone Midland Samaritans give emotional support to those experiencing feelings of distress or despair, including those which may lead to suicide. They are available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, at 1850 609090.

Good and bad days are part of our daily lives and each day we can encounter different experiences. Some experiences we can cope with and some experiences pose us problems. It is important that when you hit a time in your life when you are having too many bad days that you have someone to turn to.
